Every year, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) publishes crash numbers for every city in the state. We pulled the latest figures, for 2024, for the five cities where most of our patients live and work: Gresham, Oregon City, Happy Valley, Milwaukie and Troutdale.
- 2,151 crashes in the five cities in 2024
- 2,037 people injured, up 6.5 percent from 2023
- 14 people killed
- About 3 in 5 crashes happened at intersections
Crashes and injuries by city, 2023 and 2024
| City | Crashes 2023 | Crashes 2024 | People injured 2023 | People injured 2024 | Change in injured | People killed 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gresham | 1,006 | 1,020 | 924 | 965 | +4% | 11 |
| Oregon City | 454 | 454 | 398 | 385 | -3% | 1 |
| Happy Valley | 283 | 317 | 270 | 331 | +23% | 0 |
| Milwaukie | 179 | 196 | 174 | 165 | -5% | 1 |
| Troutdale | 169 | 164 | 146 | 191 | +31% | 1 |
| Five cities | 2,091 | 2,151 | 1,912 | 2,037 | +6.5% | 14 |
Counties, 2024: Clackamas County had 4,274 crashes, 3,761 people injured and 38 killed. Multnomah County had 8,874 crashes, 7,358 people injured and 74 killed. Statewide, Oregon had 48,414 crashes, 39,503 people injured and 536 killed.
What stands out
- Gresham carries the largest load. Nearly half of the five-city crashes (1,020 of 2,151) were in Gresham.
- Injuries rose fastest in Troutdale and Happy Valley. People injured rose 31 percent in Troutdale (146 to 191) and 23 percent in Happy Valley (270 to 331).
- Intersections matter. 1,302 of the 2,151 crashes (61 percent) were at intersections.
- Darkness and wet roads are part of the picture. 679 crashes (32 percent) happened in the dark and 638 (30 percent) on wet roads. Both are common here from October through March.
Year-to-year changes in a single city can be small numbers, so treat one year’s rise or fall as a signal to watch, not a trend.
If you are in a crash
- Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt.
- Move to a safe place if you can, and exchange insurance information.
- Take photos of the vehicles, the scene and any injuries.
- Get checked, even if you feel fine. Pain and stiffness often appear one to three days later.
- Call your insurer to open a PIP claim.
What to do after a car accident in Oregon
Why getting checked matters
Many crash injuries, especially neck injuries, do not hurt much at first. A 2019 review in the journal PM&R notes that prognosis studies indicate about half of people with a crash-related neck injury still have neck pain a year after the collision (Nolet et al., 2019). An early exam finds injuries sooner and starts a clear record of your symptoms and care.
Go to an emergency room or call 911 first if you have severe head or neck pain, weakness or numbness on one side, confusion, repeated vomiting, loss of consciousness, or loss of bladder or bowel control.
Oregon PIP pays for your care
Every Oregon auto policy on a private passenger vehicle includes Personal Injury Protection (ORS 742.520). PIP pays reasonable and necessary medical expenses from your own policy, at least $15,000 per person, for care within two years of the crash, no matter who was at fault (ORS 742.524(1)(a)).

About this data
Source: Oregon Department of Transportation, Crash Analysis and Reporting Unit, “Crash Summaries by Year by City” (CDS250) and “Crash Summaries by Year by County” (CDS200), Statewide Motor Vehicle Traffic Crashes 2015 to 2024, generated April 7, 2026. City figures cover crashes within city limits. “People injured” counts every injured person, so it can be higher than the number of crashes.
