Sciatica Relief: What Helps and When to Get Checked

Shooting or stabbing pain in your leg or lower back may be sciatica: nerve pain, sometimes severe, caused by damage to or irritation of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body.

Sciatica can be hard to live with, and at times unbearable. Surgery is rarely the first step, though: about 90 percent of people with sciatica get better without it, according to Harvard Health Publishing. How long it takes depends on the cause, and your re-exams show whether you're on track.

Here is what helps, and answers to the questions we hear most.

How to fix sciatica

A sciatica diagnosis does not mean living with pain for good. Three things that help:

#1: Exercise

Aerobic exercise and core strengthening can ease sciatica symptoms. Get guidance from a professional who knows lower back pain and sciatica before you start.

#2: Use ice and heat as directed

Heating pads and ice packs can take the edge off. Ask your doctor whether they fit your symptoms, how often to use them, and when to alternate.

#3: See a chiropractor for sciatica

Auto Injury Chiropractic has treated sciatic nerve pain for years with chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy.

Your treatment plan is built on your exam findings, your symptoms, and your goals, not a fixed package.

What causes sciatic nerve pain?

  • Pregnancy
  • Herniated discs
  • Bodily injury
  • Sciatic nerve problems
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Other causes

How long does sciatica take to heal?

It depends on the cause. Don't wait to get checked: an exam finds the source, and active care usually runs up to 12 weeks, starting at 2 to 3 visits a week and tapering as you improve. After a car accident, plan on about 8 to 12 weeks.
